The department was established in 1994 with the purpose of expanding the process of studying the Ukrainian language.  In 2000 it was transformed into the Department of Ukrainian Studies, and in 2005 in the Department of Documentation  Science and the Ukrainian Language.

Now the department graduates the speciality «Documentation Science and Information Activity»  besides it is the assignee of the speciality 029 «Information, library and archival studies».  Within this speciality, training is provided  at two educational and qualification levels: "Bachelor's Degree" and "Master's Degree". Secondly, the department is general to the entire university as to the preparation of students of all faculties of KhAI in disciplines

«The Ukrainian language for professional purposes» and  « Humanitarian courses at the student's choice.

Thirdly, the department carries out the language training of foreign students  of KhAI.

The teaching staff of the department includes 36 teachers, 19 of them have  Scientific degree (55%). The best teachers of the department were the winners of the professional skill contest

 « Higher education of Ukraine – the best names», «Ikaruses of KhAI»  and the winners of  KhAI’s rating contest. According to this rating, in 2015 -2018 the department  took the first and the second places among humanitarian departments of the university.

There are 115 full-time students  (107 bachelors, 8 masters), there are  45 bachelors of correspondence department.

The Department of Documentation  Science and the Ukrainian Language conducts active  scientific research and attracts students to scientific and practical activities. The department co-operates with leading scientific institutions of Ukraine, it annually organizes and conducts nationwide and international scientific and practical conferences on modern social communications of information logistics, library and archival studies, it actively participates in scientific conferences and has a high level of scientific publications in professional editions and publications, which are included in Inernational Scientometric Databases
